A moment of silence

http://projects.thomashandkeefe.com/lgA moment of silence, please, for the passing of one of the Great Masters.  E. Gary Gygax died today at his home, of a heart attack (according to what I've read thus far).  He was 69.

Love him or hate him, without him the hobby I so love would not exist.  When he and Dave Arneson got roleplaying on their wargaming, they created something magnificent, something that created a culture I am proud to be part of.

Most of my dearest friends came to me through gaming, and it still forms the core of my leisure life.

Thank you, Mr. Gygax.  I wish you all the best as you begin your legendary journey to your next destination.

Just learned about this myself. Sad, just very sad. Rest in peace Gary, thanks for this hobby that has so influenced my life.

The roleplaying hobby would exist without him, but would never have achieved the widespread exposure it did without his (some would say shameless) promotional skills. Say what you will about the man, but one thing is crystal clear... he set all us grognards on the path.

Bummer, just found out about this :( It'll be hard to explain to people at work why I'm sad all day.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm bummin' too, all heavy sighs and sad looks, but they have no idea who Gygax was...

It's interesting that I first got the news from my college list (and then shortly thereafter from most every gaming list I'm on.) Say what you like about Mr. Gygax, I agree that his promotional skills made it possible for so many of us to share, what might have just remained something he and Mr. Arneson and their pals did to pass the time.

It seems odd that the Founders are now passing on. Inevitable, but still sad.

Joanne
